Qumma Connection
25 Sep 2010 07:40Qumma Connection is a finnish progressive rock project headed by a multiartist Qumma. In addition to music Qumma has a long career in photography, painting and other crafty art forms.
The band, or the project, was semi-officially formed back in 2005(?), when a long time acquaintance and drummer pasi rupponen got together with Qumma for some venting and jamming. Qumma and pasi r. had previous experience of playing together in prog rock band Paha Kurki back in the 90's.
At the time of the first jam sessions it was just Warr guitar and drums with a rare appearance of bass guitar. However, the baseline of the first Qumma Connection album, Arabesque, was layed down in these jam session. When Qumma realised that he wanted to 'get the demons out of his head' and produce an album of his music it was time to consider involving other musicians into the project.
Qumma found the keyboard player Pate Kivinen (Popeda, Hanoi Rocks, Five Fifteen), an old friend, to do the keyboards and programming, and a cello player Tuukka Helminen (Kwan, Alamaailman Vasarat). Qumma composes the majority of the music of Qumma Connection with occasional input from the other project members.
Why cal Qumma Connection a project? Well, the band has never played together in a rehearsal room. Qumma acts as the connecting point between the musicians working on his music. Qumma is the node, the connection. Hence the name of the band. Nevertheless, QC is a band and the level of professionalism of the players enables this kind of networked working method to be used.
The new album, Unique, was recorded during 2008-2009. Production, mixing and mastering, took place in 2010. The album introduces a slightly happier side of Qumma, compared to somewhat darker tones of Arabesque.
